The Sri Lankan capital, Colombo is the largest city in the country and also the main port, commercial and financial centre. It is a bustling city that is a blend of old and new and visitors will be thrilled with the city’s colonial heritage, fine dining and shopping opportunities, in what is primarily a rural country. There are plenty of cultural and historical attractions to keep visitors busy for a few days, before they head off to one of the islands with their fabulous beach resorts.

  • Go shopping at the street stalls in Pettah or the three storey House of Fashion that sells off surplus clothing from the nation’s garment industry
  • The city has recently introduced the first open deck sightseeing tour the ‘Colombo City Tour’ and is a great way to see the highlights of the city if short on time
  • Play a round of golf at the Royal Colombo Golf Club where the immaculately manicured greens have attracted golfers for 129 years, offering visitors a slice of golfing history
  • Travel to Mt Lavinia Beach, one of Colombo’s more laidback suburbs for great seafood at the many restaurants dotted near the golden beach
  • Try the quintessential Sri Lankan snack, kothurotti which consists of sliced-up bits of rotti, expertly blended with a choice of chicken, beef, egg, onions, tomatoes and green chilli
